CSIRO is currently leading the development of a National Hydrogen Roadmap to be released in July 2018. The purpose of the study is to set out a strategy for turning the emerging technologies that underpin a hydrogen economy into bankable assets, as a foundation for building an economically sustainable industry in Australia.
The project considers the full scope of potential applications for hydrogen including electricity/energy storage, heat, transport and industrial uses. Working back from there, it then assesses the commercial models, regulatory frameworks and RD&D investment priorities that will allow hydrogen utilisation to become competitive in local and global markets. The roadmap is designed to help inform public and private sector investment so that the industry can scale up in a coordinated manner. It also asseses the areas along the hydrogen value chain where Australia maintains a comparative advantage and has the potential to create new economic opportunities in Australia and continue to attract foreign investment.
Sam will talk through the approach as well as some of the findings to date, with a focus on how hydrogen can complement the transition to a network with a high proportion of variable renewable energy.
