Solar is only a few years away from being the 2nd largest source of power during daytime periods, challenging black coal for dominance. The influx of this zero operating cost source of power will mean that electricity wholesale market competitive conditions in the middle of the day will resemble the same sorts of conditions we currently see around 2am to 5am at night and wholesale power prices along with feed-in tariffs are likely to plunge.
The solar industry has managed to keep growing by upsizing customers to bigger and bigger systems. But such large systems’ value hinges on the price they receive for exporting power. Is the solar industry on the verge of becoming a victim of its own success or can it keep it surging?
